| President Obama's saying that some people are making things up regarding his healthcare reform efforts, and I'm not surprised—people tend to hear a little snippet about something and then blow things out of proportion before they know all the facts (I happen to think the President did it himself during the Professor Gates arrest incident).
An excerpt from the short CNN article reads:
...the plan does not provide health insurance to illegal aliens, it does not represent a government takeover of health care and it would not lead to government funding of abortion, [President Obama] said.
"These are all fabrications that have been put out there in order to discourage people from meeting what I consider to be a core ethical and moral obligation: that is, that we look out for one another; that is, I am my brother's keeper, I am my sister's keeper. And in the wealthiest nation in the world right now we are neglecting to live up to that call."
Notice that he's making these remarks in a conference call with "religious leaders and reporters." How clever of him to throw in the line about being your brother's and sister's keeper. Healthcare can certainly fall under the responsibility of somebody's keeper. But President Obama is [vaguely] applying this Biblical concept while leaving out many other concepts and commands from God's Word. I have a hard time accepting the idea from some of the President's supporters that "we can't force the nation to live by Christian standards," when President Obama himself is trying to use Christian standards to support his efforts. We certainly won't do any good by forcing unbelievers to comply with Biblical standards, but that defense of some of the President's stances and actions just doesn't seem valid because of statements like this from the President.
We certainly can't expect any man or any man-made thing to be perfect, and I absolutely do not envy the tremendous weight that President Obama has on his shoulders. But, as with any other influential public figure, consider carefully what he says.
